Sierra Leone Maritime Administration Shines on Global Maritime Stage at Coast Guard Global Summit in Tokyo

Sierra Leone, 30 October, 2023 – The Sierra Leone Maritime Administration proudly announces its successful participation in the prestigious Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS), a global platform for dialogue and cooperation among the world’s Coast Guards. The summit, co-hosted by the Japan Coast Guard and The Nippon Foundation, is taking place in Tokyo, Japan, and marks a significant moment in the history of maritime cooperation.

The CGGS, established in 2017, has become a biennial gathering of Coast Guards from over a hundred countries, aimed at fostering global cooperation and coordination beyond bilateral and regional frameworks. This year’s summit is particularly focused on addressing increasingly globalized challenges, including natural disasters, terrorism, and piracy, as well as the protection of marine environments.

At this momentous event, the Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration, Mr. Paul Sobba Massaquoi, seized the opportunity to shine a light on Sierra Leone’s commitment to maritime security and environmental preservation. The Executive Director’s vision includes the establishment of an Admiralty court in Sierra Leone, which will address critical maritime issues such as piracy, armed robbery, illegal broadcasting, hijacking, stowaways, smuggling, illegal cargo transport, illegal and unregulated fishing, ocean dumping, and marine crime. This initiative aligns perfectly with Sierra Leone’s vital role as a littoral state and a key player in the maritime industry.

In his statement at the CGGS, the Executive Director praised the efforts of the Japanese government and The Nippon Foundation, advocating for more support to smaller nations like Sierra Leone. Notably, he had a productive meeting with the Chairman of the Nippon Foundation to discuss the potential for increased scholarships for Sierra Leonean students to pursue postgraduate degrees in maritime-related fields at institutions like the World Maritime University (WMU) and the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI). This initiative promises to empower more Sierra Leoneans to contribute to the global maritime community.

The Sierra Leone Maritime Administration is thrilled with the success of its Executive Director’s first attendance at the CGGS, as it not only illuminates Sierra Leone’s name on the world maritime stage but also highlighted the nation’s dedication to the protection of its marine environment and the pursuit of maritime excellence.
