Operations Manager/Vessel Superintendent

Location: Lagos, Nigeria

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Vessel Superintendent/Operations Manager to oversee and coordinate the operations of our fleet. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of our vessels while maintaining compliance with all relevant regulations and company policies.

Voyage Planning & Coordination:

  • Liaise with the Commercial unit to understand commercial agreements and operational requirements, aligning operational plans with contract terms.
  • Plan and coordinate all aspects of vessel operations, including reviewing task orders, voyage planning with the vessel captain, and ensuring vessel and crew readiness.
  • Oversee daily operational updates (SITREPs) and collaborate with external parties for effective operations.
  • Ensure vessel operations comply with company policies, procedures, and relevant rules and regulations.
  • Review vessel reports, requisitions, and operational requirements, and work with relevant personnel to resolve operational issues and itinerary matters. Prepare and send vessel position updates to clients.

Vessel Operation and Handling:

  • Oversee daily vessel operations and ensure compliance with industry standards and government regulations for safe operations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between the Ship’s Master, the office, and charterers during operations.
  • Provide support to vessel crew regarding familiarization with the company’s SMS, in consultation with the DPA
  • Ensure crew compliance with company procedures and operational requirements as per the SMS Manual.
  • Collaborate with the Procurement Unit to ensure the timely supply of victuals and other requisitions to vessels.
  • Coordinate and direct shipboard resources, identify potential operational problems, and recommend solutions for efficient operations.
  • Coordinate and attend third-party/client inspections, monitor non-compliances/conformities, and liaise with relevant parties for timely close-out.

Vessel Inward and Outward Operations:

  • Establish and maintain relationships with agencies and authorities and stay updated on relevant laws and regulatory requirements for port clearance, access, and permits.
  • Plan cost-effective vessel inward and outward movements, and ensure timely submission of applications, preparation of required documents, raising of NPA bills, and obtaining necessary clearances/approvals.
  • Control and minimize risks in all operations, and participate in risk assessment teams, informing the vessel and company of all security risks.
  • Support the arrangement of armed guards on board company-managed vessels or clients’ vessels.

Voyage and Operation Performance:

Monitor daily reporting, voyage, and operational performance of vessels, and provide support to the Master, Crew, Vessel, and the company, as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree/HND in Maritime Studies, Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, Transportation, Logistics or any related field.
  • Minimum of 5–7 years’ experience in maritime operations, vessel management, or related roles
  • Additional certifications in Shipping Management, Marine Operations, or Safety Management Systems (SMS) will be an added advantage.
  • Strong knowledge of international maritime laws, safety regulations, and industry best practices (ISM, ISPS, MARPOL, SOLAS, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience with voyage planning, fleet coordination, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, coordination, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
